In 2007, 8,034 companion pets were placed at the Sebastian County Humane Society; an astonishing 6,810 never left. The River Valley is at a critical stage of pet overpopulation, making it impossible for our local shelter to fulfill its mission of finding homes for adoptable pets. We can choose to stop the killing. The solution is simple: reduce the number of unwanted pets by reducing the numbers that are born, by providing an accessible and affordable spay neuter program to all pet owners.
Each year between eight and twelve million dogs, cats, kittens, and puppies end up at animal shelters around the country.
Between four and six million shelter pets will be euthanized each year
In six years one female dog and her offspring can produce 67,000 puppies
In just seven years, one female cat and her young can produce 420,000 kittens
